Hyde snags coffee and a bagel at the motel's continent breakfast and drives to the house. Dozens of cars line the street. Eva's friends have overtaken the house and the block. They sit like chimpanzees on the steps and handrail, sipping coffee, smoking joints. They glare enough hatred Hyde's way to power a factory. Do any of these people have school/jobs/families? Is the economy still that bad? (This is what a thirty-four-year-old man gets for marrying a twenty-four-year-old woman.) He overhears a male friend of Eva's ask, "Do you think Hyde's got a gun?" Another one asks, "We're not gonna let him in the house, are we?"

They fear that he's dangerous.

He's dumbfounded.

When a relationship gets screwed up, Hyde moves on. An animal that can't move on from disaster, or won't move on, is a dead animal. And that’s not Hyde.

A friend of Eva's who looks like Che Guevara pats him down at the front door. "What's your purpose?" the friend asks.

Who is this guy? I bet he's a hacker, or in cahoots with the hackers.

"I'm here to console my wife," Hyde says. The guy cringes when Hyde says "my wife." "...And I want to ask her about a mutual friend." That last part squirted out his mouth no warning. Marcello's signing books in Portland today. That's the Arctic Circle, as far as Hyde's concerned.

The Che Guevara guy taps the door and Annie appears. "Hyde's clean," the guys says, "but I'm not sure where his head's at."

"What's your agenda for this visit, Hyde?" Annie asks. She's on the verge of laughing at him for no reason, like she did at the motel.

"A friend texted me about the hacking," he says. "I want to console Eva."

"Good." Annie opens the door and pulls Hyde inside. "Please sign this statement."

It's boilerplate celebrity pap, a statement in his name condemning the cyber-attack and asking for privacy "as we work through our issues."

"You wrote this?" Hyde asks, signing it with the tap of a button on her phone.

"You like it?" she asks.

"I like that you took the high road," he says.

Her smile brightens. Laughter is building. It's inexplicable to Hyde. Why does she find him so funny?

"The high road is the only road," Annie says. "Let me check with Eva."

The friends in the kitchen eat Hyde's frozen blueberry waffles, drink his Italian roast coffee and stare at him like he's Charles Manson. Hyde knows the drill. When the shit hits the fan, and you're an unlikeable introvert, you don't get the benefit of the doubt. The knives are out for you.

Marcello would get the benefit of the doubt.

Annie waltzes out. "She'll see you. You've got five minutes."
